A tribute to one of Leonard Baskin’s more
esteemed subjects. Charles Meryon was a French artist of the nineteenth century
whose exquisite skills as an etcher were met with little notice until after his
death, when the value of his work soon escalated. An illegitimate child and
severely colour blind, Meryon suffered the effects of mental illness for much
of his life, dying in an asylum at the age of forty-seven. This work, typical
of Baskin, speaks for itself.
